Amazon Web Services said it has received FISMA accreditation from the U.S. General Services Administration.
FISMA—Federal Information Security Management Act—requires agencies keep their IT security and the data associated with them secure. FISMA is typically a rite of passage for vendors selling to the government.
AWS has already been seen as good enough for government work by many agencies, but the FISMA accreditation is likely to open up Amazon’s infrastructure to more deals.
Specifically, AWS received the FISMA Moderate level rating. Amazon EC2, S3 and Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) were accredited as FISMA.
In a nutshell, AWS is collecting a bevy of key acronyms for accreditation: FISMA Moderate, FISMA Low and Moderate, PCI DSS Level 1, FIPS 140-2, ISO 27001, and SAS-70 type II as well as environments to meet HIPAA regulations.
The next FISMA level is high, an a acreditation that focuses on high-level IT systems.
