The family of the late prominent poet and artist W.S. Rendra intend to sue the promoter of a Kantata Barock concert, PT Airo Swadaya Stupa, for failing to acquire prior permission from the family of Rendra, who contributed to some of Kantata’s songs.

The Kantata concert, held at the Gelora Bung Karno main stadium on Friday evening, included several songs that were Rendra’s work, including Nocturno, Partai Bonek (Hooligan Party), Balada Pengangguran (Ballad of the Unemployed), Kemarin dan Esok (Yesterday and Tomorrow), Nyanyian Preman (Song of a Thug) and Kesaksian (Testimony).

“We are suing the promoter. I think they know that they should have asked for permission,” Rendra’s daughter Clara Shinta told a press conference on Friday.

Clara said that the promoter had only sent the family a notification letter on Wednesday, saying that the band would perform some of Rendra’s songs as a tribute to the late poet.

She said that the letter, which was considered one-way communication, had undermined the family as the holder of Rendra’s copyrights. The family argued that the concert was a commercial event as the promoter sold tickets at prices ranging from Rp 100,000 (US$11) to Rp 500,000.

The family’s lawyer, Ferry Amahorsea, said that any commercial events involving Rendra’s work had to be approved by Rendra’s family.(swd)
