President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has asked the Indonesian people not to use violence in dealing with religious differences.

“We should not use force, let alone violence towards those who are different from us,” Yudhoyono said in his speech during the 150th anniversary of Huria Kristen Batak Protestant (HKBP) church at the Bung Karno stadium on Sunday.

He said that every religion taught noble values and kindness, which had become the basis of developing the nation’s character, Antara news wire reported.

He said Indonesia’s religious diversity and culture should not be the cause of disharmony and disunity.

“The diversity of our nation is a wealth that we should be grateful for,” said Yudhoyono.

He asked all Indonesian people to respect and honor each other, even though they all lived with differences.
