Started in 2008, the 5.5-hectare superblock development comprising a mall, apartment, hotel, office building and museum, is expected to be completed in 2012. (JP/Nurhayati) The Jakarta administration has denied the construction proposals of seven new shopping malls in Jakarta in line with its decision to hold a moratorium on mall construction in the capital.

“We have refused seven mall construction proposals since June,” Jakarta administration’s spatial planning agency head Wiriyatmoko said Friday as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.

The Jakarta administration finally decided to conduct a moratorium on mall construction after seeing a great number of malls with empty retail space, and in light of an aggressive campaign to restrict the building of new shopping malls.

As well as reports on empty lots, the fact that these malls created massive traffic congestion in their surrounding areas was also considered a key factor in the decision.
