Rendra’s family sues Kantata Barock concert promoter

Rendra’s family sues Kantata Barock concert promoter
The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | Sat, 12/31/2011 1:36 PM

The family of the late prominent poet and artist W.S. Rendra intend to sue the promoter of a Kantata Barock concert, PT Airo Swadaya Stupa, for failing to acquire prior permission from the family of Rendra, who contributed to some of Kantata’s songs.

The Kantata concert, held at the Gelora Bung Karno main stadium on Friday evening, included several songs that were Rendra’s work, including Nocturno, Partai Bonek (Hooligan Party), Balada Pengangguran (Ballad of the Unemployed), Kemarin dan Esok (Yesterday and Tomorrow), Nyanyian Preman (Song of a Thug) and Kesaksian (Testimony).

“We are suing the promoter. I think they know that they should have asked for permission,” Rendra’s daughter Clara Shinta told a press conference on Friday.

Clara said that the promoter had only sent the family a notification letter on Wednesday, saying that the band would perform some of Rendra’s songs as a tribute to the late poet.

She said that the letter, which was considered one-way communication, had undermined the family as the holder of Rendra’s copyrights. The family argued that the concert was a commercial event as the promoter sold tickets at prices ranging from Rp 100,000 (US$11) to Rp 500,000.

The family’s lawyer, Ferry Amahorsea, said that any commercial events involving Rendra’s work had to be approved by Rendra’s family.(swd)

What a Large Enterprise CIO Would Think of the SAP Cloud Position

I’m well into the second day of the SAP Analyst Summit.  SAP executives have been pounding the following talking points:

-          We’ve caught up on the cloud!

-          We have a lot of on-demand apps!

-          We can’t wait to cross-sell these to our client base!

-          We will continue to build more on-demand apps on the periphery because we believe that most large enterprises do not want to change out their ‘book of record‘ systems.

The implication is that SAP is building and promoting cloud, HANA and mobile apps that connect to pre-existing application suites (e.g., BusinessOne, Business ByDesign and Enterprise Suite). They are not planning on materially re-working the Enterprise Suite code anytime soon .

If I were an executive from a large enterprise, I’d be a bit chagrined.  What SAP is doing via this strategy is:

-          SAP is creating mechanisms to sell more products and generate more fees from large enterprises. These new apps are additive and are not replacing existing modules. They will cost you more money, more money, more money….

-          They won’t be bringing all of the new cloud economics and technologies to change out the old transaction processing solutions. As a short-term strategy from SAP, I’m sort of okay with this. But, the real strategic challenge that SAP customers must demand of SAP is a focused program to reduce the significant TCO of continued operation of the ‘book of record’ software.  If SAP is serious about increasing market share, it must get serious about materially reducing the cost of ownership of these on-premise products, too.

-          Yes, SAP plans to someday find a way to change the ‘book of record’ systems in an ‘non-disruptive’ manner. But, I’m not holding my breath on this. For example, SAP has one way to store organization structures in its Enterprise Suite software. SuccessFactors, a company SAP is attempting to acquire, has another. How can one create a third platform that reconciles different data models from within the various SAP product lines and from acquired product lines without some measure of disruption? Moreover, I would expect customers would want the new solutions to be disruptive as only a radically new product design could more effectively allow them to compete in a modern, interconnected, global, volatile business world. The new solutions must be disruptive to make the new products competitive with the likes of Workday (and its REA underpinnings) and other products. The speed with which they can make these non-disruptive changes to the Enterprise Suite products will bear massively on their ability to retain customers over time. Their key advantage today (SAP’s not customer’s) is that few competitive offerings exist to be viable substitute products for the book of record applications.  Customer defections should be low for the time being.

-          SAP will use its HANA services (an in-memory database/analytics toolset) to re-work some of the computationally intensive aspects of the ‘book of record’ applications. For example, algorithmic functionality (e.g., to optimally determine production schedules, to better forecast financials, to make better pricing decisions, etc.) would be enhanced by making these continuous processes and not just periodic (i.e., daily) calculations.  That said, these would be surgical enhancements and not necessarily wholesale replacements for existing Enterprise Suite applications.

While it’s good to see that SAP has really gotten focused on the cloud, it is 2011. Salesforce.com was founded in 1999. NetSuite (nee NetLedger) was founded in 1998. While SAP has the capital and people to catch up, it still is in catch up mode. The PaaS story they have is improved but the PaaS ecosystem is not primetime ready yet. The Business ByDesign product line (nee A1S) was announced in 2007 but only really started to get released in 2010.  The Sybase acquisition brought a lot of mobile capability to SAP but this is the first time SAP has been able to announce a pile of new developments in its mobile story.  Data points from SAP suggest that the ship has turned but it may not be as far out of the harbor as buyers might want. Maybe, if the company gets its cloud engines to full steam, it will be a more formidable and relevant competitor to Workday and Salesforce.com.

If I were a mid-market executive, I might like the current SAP cloud story. SAP is planning to ramp up the Business ByDesign (BBD) push into this space. They intend to cross-sell SuccessFactors here. Their BBD channel partners are building out vertical extensions with the BBD SDK.  One BBD channel partner reported that their 2011 plan for BBD was blown out. They have sold more than twice their projected numbers. SAP is still planning on having 1000 customers for this product line by end of year. Product sales reflect sales to mid-market firms and to subsidiaries of large enterprises. The latter is a recent sales focus of SAP for the BBD product line.  BBD was and is a clear focus of the new SAP On-Demand offerings. Its profile within SAP should continue  to improve for the next few years.

In several meetings with SAP executives, fellow analysts Dennis Howlett, Jon Reed and others brought home point after point with SAP about the need to get a robust PaaS (platform as a service) and developer ecosystem elevated to a major part of their future success strategy. I think the executives heard this but whether it comes to fruition in any sort of timely manner remains to be seen.

Bottom line: SAP cloud progress has been notable. BUT, the benefits will be uneven with mid-market buyers getting a better value experience in the short term.

Longer term, SAP may be on the right track. Their focus and execution against their strategy will be critical to long-term market success. Speed, in my opinion, is the new strategic challenge they must address and make a core competency of the firm. Speed can be used to lower the cost of solutions dramatically for all users. It is these lower cost solutions that will drive not just customer retention but new customer acquisitions. Good luck SAP.

Full disclosure: SAP picked up my travel expenses for this event.

Barca Ingin Pulangkan Romeu ke Camp Nou

FOTO:AFPBeritabola.com Barcelona -
Setelah membawa pulang Cecs Fabregas dari Arsenal, Barcelona berniat
melakukan hal yang sama pada Oriol Romeu. Impresif bersama Chelsea,
Josep Guardiola dikabarkan berniat memulangkannya ke Camp
Nou.

dalam klausul pembeliannya The Blues menyepakati kemungkinan buy
back.

Meski jadi pendatang baru dan usia masih sangat muda,
Romeu tampil memuaskan bersama Chelsea.
menit awal alias menjadi starter.

Melihat performa Romeu di
Stamford Bridge, Barca dikabarkan tertarik merekrutnya kembali. Romeu

Sementara jika membelinya
di tahun 2013 harganya bertambah menjadi 15 juta euro.

Akankah
Barca mendapatkan kembali Romeu? Beberapa media Inggris menyebut hal
itu sulit terjadi. Memuaskan di periode awal kedatangan, Andre
Villas-Boas disebut-sebut sudah meminta Chelsea memproteksi
Romeu.

Meski begitu, dia hingga
kini masih merasa belum memberi apapun buat The Catalans.

Total
tembakan.

Berada di tengah banyak super star sepakbola Camp
Nou, Alexis sadar kalau dirinya belum berkontribusi besar untuk
timnya. Karena itulah dia tak malu mengakui kalau dirinya memang belum
menjadi apa-apa setelah hanya empat bulan menjadi punggawa The
Catalans.

"Saya belum melakukan apapun di Barcelona. Tapi saya
Italia. Di Barcelona saya menjalinya selangkah demi selangkah," sahut
Alexis seperti diberitakan Mundodeportivo.

Bersama Barcelona,
Alexis menyebut dirinya mendapat banyak ilmu baru dari rekan-rekannya.
Pesepakbola asal Chile itu tak sungkan mengaku kalau dirinya belajar
banyak hal dari Lionel Messi.

"Setiap hari saya belajar sesuatu
seperti itulah Barca. Saya mengikuti langkah Messi untuk bisa
memenangi itu semua," tuntas dia.

Gerrard: Terima Kasih, Liverpudlian

FOTO:Getty Images/Scott HeaveyBeritabola.com Liverpool -
Meriahnya sambutan fans ketika sang kapten, Steven Gerrard, kembali

Sungguh tahun

Liverpudlian bahkan sejak ia melakukan pemanasan sebelum pertandingan.
Suasana stadion makin riuh rendah ketika pemain idolanya itu menginjak
lapangan.

"Sangat senang rasanya bisa bergabung kembali dan
bermain bersama rekan-rekanku lagi. Delapan minggu terakhir terasa
sangat lama.

mungkin," tuntasnya.

Based on historical data, the researchers conclude that the compromise took place on, or before Friday, December 16.

Once users visit the site, a malicious script will load from 3max[.]com serving CVE-2011-3544.

Detection rate for the malicious payload is low.

UPDATE: Emerson Povey from Amnesty International comments:

We have been working with our hosting service to resolve the problem. They have cleaned both servers, rebooted, and removed the script. At 2pm today they confirmed that the issue is now resolved.

Top 10 compact digital cameras of 2011 (Holiday Gift Guide)

Picking a list of the 10 best compact digital cameras at any given moment is as hard as pinning a tail on a moving donkey (make that 10 moving donkeys).  With camera vendors vying to capture every potential buyer with a perfectly suited camera, there’s a constant glut of new models hitting the market. At last January’s CES 2011 alone, manufacturers trotted out new cameras practically by the dozen, debuting a whopping 60 compact models. With new announcements coming every month throughout the rest of the year, the compact camera market has seen well over 130 new additions this year. The good news is that you’re sure to find a perfect camera for absolutely anyone on your holiday shopping list this year. And you’ll find some fantastic deals as camera vendors try to clear the decks for a new batch of spring models coming at next year’s CES, which will be the first to include the “colocated” PMA (Photo Marketing Association) trade show. To help you narrow down the options, here’s my list of the top 10 compact digital cameras currently on the market. Suggested list prices range from $430 to $1,200 for the first four cameras (on this page) down to to $110 for the least expensive (on page 3), though you’ll likely find lower street prices for many of these cameras. [See also my list of Top digital SLR cameras of 2011.]

Image Gallery: Check out photos of the Top 10 compact digital cameras of 2011.Fujifilm FinePix X100

1. Canon PowerShot S100
The chart-topping Canon PowerShot S90 from my mid-year top 10 compact cameras of 2010 was everyone’s favorite until the camera was updated by the S95 in August of last year. This fall’s Canon PowerShot S100 improved upon the previous two models with a complete overhaul of the innards, though the super-compact body design remains very similar (save for the welcome addition of a small grip, as well as a new silver color option). With a whole new imaging system (including a faster processor and a completely new CMOS sensor), the S100 also brings a wider and longer 5x zoom lens (24-120mm equivalent, f/2.0-5.9). A built-in GPS receiver enables automatic geotagging and location logging for photos and videos, and the ability to zoom while shooting video is a nice addition too. Having just hit the market in November, the S100 may be hard to find in stores (and certainly not at a discount). But you can find great deals on the S95, which is still an awesome camera in its own right.

[See a gallery of sample photos shot with the S100.]

2. Olympus XZ-1
The first high-end compact point-and-shoot to be released by Olympus in almost a decade, the Olympus XZ-1 was a standout out among the CES crowd early this year. Though it’s not quite as tiny as Canon’s S100 and S95, it’s still relatively trim — a touch bigger than the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5, which I’ve also included on this list. Low-light shooting is a priority with the XZ-1: The bright 4x zoom lens (28-112mm equivalent) has a maximum aperture of f/1.8 at the wide angle and f/2.5 at telephoto, and a dedicated low-light mode automatically adjusts ISO sensitivity up to ISO 3200. There’s also an Autofocus Illuminator to assist with focusing in dark environments. The XZ-1’s high-resolution 610,000-dot, 3-inch OLED display, also stands out from the crowd, enabling deeper blacks and higher contrast ratios than more typical TFT screens. One of my favorite features was cribbed straight from Canon: A control ring around lens works much like the one Canon originally introduced in the S90 (and still has on the S100). Combined with the wheel controller on the back of the camera, the control ring lets you easily access all manual settings on the fly.

[See a photo gallery of the XZ-1 and gallery of sample photos shot with the XZ-1.]

[Read the review] [Check prices]

3. Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5
Released in August 2010, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 can still hold its own among newer competitors like the S100 and XZ-1. Plus, being the oldest camera on this list, it can be found at greater discounts (for example, Amazon recently offered a one-day deal on the LX5 for just $269) . Like the S100, its ultra-wide-angle 24mm equivalent lens has a bright f/2.0 maximum aperture, and delivers impressive image quality in low light with a sensitivity range up to ISO 12,800 (in high-sensitivity mode). Like the XZ-1, the LX5 includes a hot shoe for adding an external flash, and it also accepts an optional electronic viewfinder. Ultimately, though, it’s the impressive image quality and better-than-average performance of the LX5 that keeps it in the running despite newer entries with more advanced technology.

[See a photo gallery of the LX5.]

[Read the review] [Check prices]

4. Fujifilm FinePix X100
After a huge build-up and much buzz and ballyhoo, the Fujifilm FinePix X100 started shipping in March of this year, only to be thwarted by earthquake and tsunami damage to production facilities. But, as they say, good things come to those who wait and for the lucky folks with 1,200 smackers to drop on it, the X100 delivers. Not only is it a thing of rare beauty — out-styling all but possibly Leica cameras in its retro appeal — but it’s also a photo enthusiast’s dream with a full-SLR-sized sensor (APS-C) and innovative features such as its hybrid optical/electronic viewfinder. Of course for that kind of coin you can get yourself a more flexible interchangeable lens compact (ILC) camera (or a decent digital SLR for that matter), but if money is no object, the X100 may be the camera of the year.

[See a photo gallery of the X100 and gallery of sample photos shot with the X100.]

Google takes on Asia

With a $300 million dollar investment into their first datacenter in Asia, Google looks to improve their footprint beyond the US and Europe. The new datacenter in Hong Kong, a city which is estimated to have almost 5,000,000 Internet users, will be the first datacenter of Google’s planned expansion into the Asian market. Additional facilities are in the planning stage for Singapore and Taiwan.

The $300,000,000 investment includes the cost of almost seven acres of land in the Tseung Kwan O Industrial Estate in Kowloon and the construction effort has just begun, according to reports from Google. The entire facility is slated to be finished in 2013. Like many data center projects, despite the enormous dollar figures being mentioned, the completed facility will employ only 25 full-time staff when in operation.

Google has stated that they selected Hong Kong for their initial foray into Asia because of the geographic location, energy infrastructure, and educated and skilled workforce. One would think that there were also considerations relating to placing their first Asian facility in China, the most populous country and the one with the fastest growing Internet user base.

Given Google’s somewhat tempestuous relationship with China’s government in the past, it will be interesting to see how this facility factors into future plans and negotiations between Google and the Chinese government should access, search, and information availability issues continue to be points of contention.

Ragunan Park and Ride Facility Operates 24 Hours

In order to attract public’s interest in using TransJakarta bus,
Jakarta Provincial Government provides park and ride facility in the
area of Ragunan bus stop, Pasarminggu, South Jakarta. This 1,074
meters wide three-story facility is able to accommodate 91 cars and
100 motorcycles.

“Residents just need to park their vehicles
here and continue the trip using TransJakarta bus,” stated Jakarta
Governor Fauzi Bowo in Ragunan Park and Ride, Wednesday
(12/28).

However, current parking system is still separated
with TransJakarta bus. But in the future, the pattern will be changed
so the parking lot is directly connected with TransJakarta bus stop to
ease private vehicle users who will switch using TransJakarta
bus.

Udar Pristono as Head of Jakarta Transportation Department
said this park and ride facility operates for 24 hours. Its ground
floor is able to accommodate 35 cars, first floor 27 cars, and second
floor 29 cars.

“The parking tariff is referred to Bylaw No.
1/2006 about Local Retribution. Car parking tariff costs Rp 3,000 for
first hour and Rp 1,500 for the next hour, while motorcycle parking
tariff costs Rp 750 per hour,” he explained.

In the future,
Jakarta Transportation Department will build another park and ride
facilities near Kalideres Terminal, Jl. Latumenten, and Pulogebang
Terminal. The Pulogebang park and ride facility, which planned to be
inaugurated in December 2012, will able to accommodate 800 cars and

Microsoft: No Consumer Electronics Show for us in 2013

Well how ’bout that. Another of those seemingly crazy Microsoft rumors was true.

Microsoft won’t be keynoting the Consumer Electronics Show in 2013, as I first noted on Windows Weekly a couple of weeks back. In fact, Microsoft won’t even have a booth at next year’s CES, though company execs will still be attending and holding meetings with customers and partners.

Microsoft will be counting on its own events, stores, social media and marketing as venues and channels for its big announcements, as Corporate Vice President of Communications Frank Shaw announced in a blog post on December 21. Sounds a lot like… Apple — at least to this Microsoft Watcher.

CEO Steve Ballmer is slated to keynote the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in 2012, however, on January 9, starting at 6:30 p.m. PT.

Ros Meminta Pemerkosa Dihukum Mati

Depok. Ros bersyukur perampok dan pemerkosa dirinya
ditangkap.

Ros, penggilan Rosmiyati, berharap polisi menghukum
mati atau penjara seumur hidup para pelaku. Jika hukumannya ringan, ia
(28/12).

Ros sendiri terlihat kian membaik. Terkait ucapan
komedian Olga Syahputra, Ros amat menyayangkan sikap tidak sensitif
Olga.

Padahal, penderitaannya amat menyakitkan. Perampokan disertai
perkosaan dialami Ros pada 14 Desember lalu.

Korban dirampok

Women, children in Bima clash released

Women, children in Bima clash released
The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | Wed, 12/28/2011 11:06 AM
A | A | A |

Police released on Tuesday nine of 53 suspects detained after a fatal clash between demonstrators and police in Lambu district in Bima, West Nusa Tenggara (WTB), according to their attorney.

The released individuals comprised women and children, said their lawyer, Arifudin from the Insani Legal Aid and Consultation Center in Bima, kompas.com reported.

As suspects, they must regularly report to the police.

Officers from the local police and the WTB Mobile Brigade special operations unit used deadly force on Saturday to break up demonstrators blocking access to Sape port organized under the banner of the People's Front Against Mining (FRAT).

The group had been demonstrating since Dec. 19, demanding that Bima Regent Ferry Zulkarnaen revoke PT Sumber Mineral Nasional’s (SMN) mining permit.

A new governance era and Asian anxieties

A new governance era and Asian anxieties
Simon Tay, Singapore | Tue, 12/27/2011 8:00 PM
A | A | A |

History may judge this was the year when the 21st century really began. Back in 2000, continuity seemed assured, with the US consolidating power and primacy. One decade on, changes potentially upend the global balance.

The financial crisis that began in the West in late 2008 is entering a second and more dangerous phase. The eurozone shows up not only sovereign financial problems but also the difficulties in exercising collective leadership. The US is not in acute crisis and its economy showed better demand in the last quarter of 2011.

Everyone agrees something needs to be done. Yet Washington, D.C. is gridlocked — witness failure to agree ways to cut the budget deficit. From very different ends of the American spectrum, the Tea Party revolution and the Occupy Wall Street movement evidence a welling restiveness.

Across the Middle East, the Arab Spring has turned into a longer season of uncertainty. Some celebrate Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi’s end and call for resolution in Syria.

But beyond old autocracies, the emerging concern is who will next govern, and how. With the landslide win for Islamist parties, Egypt’s December poll brings that question into sharp focus.

How has Asia coped? Growth continued for most for much of the year. Some commentators have predicted that this is the time when the region will soon catch up and then surpass the West. Reality is more complex.

Asia is not unaffected. Markets are in tumult, and economic growth rates across the region have been shaved. Prospects for 2012 are mixed, even for those like China and India with large domestic markets, let alone the smaller economies.

Politically, there is no Asian Spring. But governments across the region deal with new expectations from citizens. In erstwhile pariah state Myanmar, the newly installed government has freed political prisoners and will allow long detained Aung San Suu Kyi to contest elections. Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore too have seen changes that make for greater participation and more complex politics.

For established Asian democracies — Indonesia, the Philippines and India, — the challenge goes beyond electoral issues.

Demands in this past year have grown for governance that is less corrupt and more effective. Public protests and a number of high profile prosecutions result.

Outside of some copycat demonstrations, the Occupy Wall Street movement has not shown strength across Asian cities.

But the political imperative from Singapore to Bangkok and Beijing is to close the stark gap between
the Haves and Have Nots.

Asset bubbles in housing and inflation in basics of food and energy have been testing governments to make growth more inclusive.

With its economy still running ahead, China has loomed larger this year in the expectations of others. Yet Chinese leaders grapple with many of these same issues, and on a much larger scale. External conditions are becoming more difficult, and domestic issues too.

Measures put in place to keep up growth have distorted the market with too much easy credit. With a dip in growth, social unrest is growing. With its upcoming leadership transition, China’s rulers must do all they can to prevent an economic hard landing and shore up political legitimacy.

As the Chinese military builds up and a more assertive diplomacy is heard, however, acceptability is also an issue with near neighbors.

Global changes in 2011 have come quick and complex — a political, economic and social vortex. Asian states have not been immediately caught in that swirl. But they feel the pull more than many admit.

This shows up an ongoing problem in the region’s relationship to the global system. Despite economic growth, Asians are currently more influenced by global trends than being able to influence what happens. As the US and Europe weaken, gaps in global governance show.

Witness the G-20’s current lack of coordination, and the lack of success in the Doha trade talks. Even the acclaimed success in the year-end climate change meeting only starts off negotiations toward a later agreement and we should expect continuing differences.

The world at year-end is no better than it was at the start. Indeed, conditions — especially in the last quarter — have become increasingly difficult. Asians may make a New Year wish for the US and Europe to put their houses in order.

But looking ahead, Asians must consider what they can and resolve to secure peace and prosperity
for themselves and the wider global system.

Is the Mac Pro dead?

As a product manager in a previous life, I often looked at products to see which should live and which should die. The decisions are mostly financial, but there are also judgments around the impact on key customer groups and the rest of the product line.

Let’s start with the numbers
Apple doesn’t break out numbers by individual product line. They do tell us that of the roughly 4.5 million Macs forecast for this quarter, two thirds will be portables. That leaves about 1.5 million desktop Macs.

Desktop Macs include the iMac, Mac mini and the Mac Pro. I guesstimate that the iMac makes up 80% of the desktops, the Mac mini three quarters of the remainder and the Mac Pro gets the rest, or about 75,000 units a quarter.

At an estimated average sale price of $3500, Apple has a nifty little $1 billion business with gross margins that probably exceed most of the rest of the product line. Say a GM of 40% and you’re talking over a $400 million annual gross margin contribution.

But, and it is a big but, given Apple’s rapid growth the Mac Pro is probably the slowest growing - if not shrinking - Mac in the lineup. Not only that, Mac Pro sales have nosedived since the advent of Thunderbolt 6 months ago. MacBook Pro buyers are affluent and not stupid: as the only non-Thunderbolt Mac still made, it’s clear that a new one should be on the drawing board.

Will Apple pull the trigger?
The arguments inside Apple against the Pro go like this:

  • With Thunderbolt on the iMac the I/O advantages of the Mac Pro are rapidly disappearing.
  • Moreover, as Intel continues its march to 6, 8 and 12 core processors with lower total power requirements, we’ll be able to put almost as many cores into an iMac as we do a Mac Pro.
  • As third-party Thunderbolt products proliferate, customers will have the option to upgrade their iMacs in a much more modular fashion than the Mac Pro ever allowed.
  • With the Final Cut Pro X introduction fiasco, many of our most loyal and demanding users - video editors - are deserting FCPX.
  • In short, the Mac Pro has a shrinking customer base while offering fewer unique features at a high cost compared to competitive Windows systems.

The Mac Pro team is responding:

  • Yes, sales are down, but only because we don’t have Thunderbolt and we haven’t upgraded to the latest and greatest Intel processors. Our sophisticated buyers are only waiting to see what we can deliver.
  • We will always be able to put more cores into a Mac Pro than we than an iMac, and as the benefits of multicore processing spread to more applications this will grow our total available market.
  • For many customers upgrading in the box is much more attractive than upgrading across multiple thunderbolt cables and little boxes. These are workhorse systems whose value is not only performance but also their ability to meet business needs for investment protection.
  • Yes, the Final Cut Pro X intro was poorly handled, but we will recover in unit sales because of the larger demographic the new product addresses. When that happens many of those customers will want the reliability, expandability and performance of a Mac Pro.
  • Finally, do not underestimate the halo effect of the Mac Pro for all Macs. A high-end system makes customers much more comfortable buying smaller systems for critical work, because they know that if they have to they can upgrade with minimal disruption to their workflow and training investments.

Inside Apple
This discussion takes place in a larger context: the fight for engineering resources among all the different Mac teams. The Mac business has been overshadowed in the last 5 years by the iPhone and now the iPad.

At every budget discussion someone will ask why we don’t take the engineering resources devoted to the Mac Pro and give them to faster growing product lines. There isn’t an Apple engineering manager that wouldn’t like more resources. The weakest teams are always at risk.

Substitute technologies
The Mac Pro has several key features:

  • Storage expandability. More DIMM slots than any other Mac - and they’re ECC - 4 SATA disk bays and 2 optical drive bays.
  • 3 PCIe slots. Add media capture cards, eSATA and USB 3.0, upgrade graphics cards and more.
  • Dual-Ethernet. Handy for link aggregation.
  • Choice of CPUs. Up to 12 cores.
  • Multiple displays.3 or more, depending on number and type of video cards.

Can these features be replicated on an iMac?

No ECC on other Macs, a downer for critical work. But you can get 32GB of RAM on a iMac with expensive 8GB SO-DIMMs.

3 PCI-e slots can be added via Thunderbolt for $1k, but you’re limited to Thunderbolt-aware drivers. Assume you’ll be able to get the most popular cards in a few months.

With those cards you could add eSATA and USB 3.0, another GigE NIC with 1-4 ports, another graphics card and more monitors. But what would it cost?

If you strip out the 27″ iMac monitor at a hypothetical $800, a top-of-the-line quad-core i7 iMac costs $1500. Add the 3 slot cage and the cost equals the cost of a bottom-of-the-line Mac Pro - with a slower 2.8GHz Xeon. My iMac is looking better all the time.

The Storage Bits take
If I were the Mac Pro product manager I’d focus less on processors and more on I/O. Replace the 4 3.5″ SATA drive slots with 16 2.5″ drive slots. Add 4 Thunderbolt ports. Dual 10Gb Ethernet ports. USB 3.0. And an optional 500GB SSD.

And then I’d get with my Intel buddies and figure out how to offer a credible processor upgrade. Not that many would buy it, but the investment protection message would be very comforting.

Obviously the future of Apple doesn’t ride on big honking towers. But there is a core Mac Pro market whose demand for high-performance, high-value apps provides an entry point for new software technologies that will eventually come to lower-end Macs.

With probably no more than 25 people on the Mac Pro team, the payback to Apple is huge. I hope the desire for operational efficiency doesn’t simplify the Pro out of existence.

Comments welcome, of course. My 4 year old Mac Pro sold for $2k a few months ago - double what many new Wintel towers go for. I like my iMac but I’d love a modernized Pro.

Social business and enterprise usage: The lessons

Those that put their shoulder to the effort at moving to social business are achieving very real and statistically significant benefits.Fresh off the road and putting the final touches on a new book (more on that in an upcoming post), I’ve been catching up this week with new reports from several leading research groups as they’ve assessed how social business has been doing and where it’s headed in general. There is good news overall in terms of growth as well as crucial new insights that decision makers looking at updating the way their organizations engage with their workers, customers, and the world should be tracking.

First off is Forrester’s new estimate of the size of the social business industry, which they’ve put at $6.4 billion by 2016, an order of magnitude larger than the (by comparison) paltry $600 million it was just last year. Although the size of the entire worldwide investment in social business has recently been estimated to be as high at $100 billion, Forrester is specifically tracking the investment in the enabling software itself. This includes enterprise social networks, social collaboration suites, and other social business solutions, and not the entire project investment that organizations make as they roll out social software. This does not seem to be a either lowering or raising of previous projections, such as their 2008 forecast that the industry would be $4.6 billion in size by 2013. For a useful cross check, we can see that ABI Research’s new figures, which were released today, has lower figures yet shows a very similar 57% yearly growth (compared to Forrester 60%.)

What is interesting, however, is the fairly low estimates of actual adoption by Forrester, citing that only 12 percent of information workers are provided with enterprise social collaboration software, while just 8 percent of them use it once a week. This is one of the lowest estimates I’ve seen, especially given that Forrester has previously reported here on ZDNet that nearly a third, or 29%, of enterprise workers are using social tools this year.

Moving To Social Business: Sustaining Enterprise 2.0 Adoption

These numbers contrast with McKinsey’s fifth annual report on how social technologies are faring in the enterprise, released a few weeks ago. Their report claims the following:

Seventy-two percent of the respondents report that their companies are deploying at least one [social] technology, and more than 40 percent say that social networking and blogs are now in use.

So while the data on social business adoption, at least for internal use, varies considerably from as little as 8% to as much as 40% (and sometimes even higher as I cited recently in an exploration of all social business adoption trends), the one trend that has been abundantly clear over the years is that uptake and actual use continues to grow year over year. In fact, whatever the actual adoption rate is, it was less than last year and will be greater next year, of that there is virtually no dispute.

However, this does underscore one major issue with tracking enterprise sales for social business: Sales of licenses or seats does not necessarily translate into adoption. In fact, far from it. From my research on social business adoption, I’ve found that workforce collaboration and business processes which supported by social tools, at least the way they’re often deployed, is often perceived as an optional activity and one that’s often not well integrated into how work gets done. Workers already have older (though theoretically less effective) ways of getting work done that they know, understand, and are thoroughly and culturally habituated to. In other words, sales of social software doesn’t tell us nearly as much about what’s really happening with social business in the enterprise as much as those within the organizations themselves actually reporting what they’re specifically doing.

McKinsey & Company Social Business Technology Survey - Fifth Year

This then is what makes McKinsey’s latest yearly survey of social technologies in large organizations much more interesting in terms of finding out what’s really taking palce. In the 2011 data, they’ve captured a detailed snapshot from over 4,000 global executives, by far the most ever to have participated in their research. What emerges from their study of not only this year’s data, but the information gathered across all five years, is fascinating. In my analysis, I believe there are some very significant new pieces of information that organizations deploying social media across their functional units and lines of business should be acutely aware of.

The lessons of 5 years of social business

Based on this data, the key takeaways from social business and enterprise usage over the last five years of adoption are the following:

  • Adoption requires sustained effort. McKinsey found that companies moved into and out of the developing category (nascent adoption) and into fully networked and back again into developed over the years. In my experience, communities of people behave differently over time, there is a certain ebb and flow to social discourse and interaction, that’s not usually present in non-organic systems. More specifically, companies often put most of their effort into an initial effort at socializing an organization, a set of processes, or a group of people. As those running successful online communities will tell you, it’s a continual and never-ending process, not an upfront one. Lesson: Being social requires long-term commitment, ongoing investment, and proactive work for as long as it takes place. This is not different really than cultivating any kind of human relationships; they either grow or they wane.
  • Social business is statistically correlated with important bottom-line benefits. Better operating margins and market share gains are all closely correlated with companies that are distinctly better networked socially. But more intriguingly, market leadership was generally not correlated with being more socially networked. Lesson: McKinsey feels that market leaders are less inclined to push ahead for more benefits when they are already on top. While this does make sense, I believe the nuance here is that very successful companies in the #1 slot in their industry tend to think they are already doing things right, thus external innovation is less attractive to them. This is generally good news for companies in the challenging position, given that the other correlated benefits then indicate they will become more competitive against the market leaders by adopting social business.
  • There’s a strong sense that social business will imminently and fundamentally change organizations. A clear signal in the survey indicated that executives believe that social business will transform and remake the way they work across the board, especially how they find new ideas, operate their functions, strategically plan, how they allocate resources, match workers to tasks, and assess worker performance. The consensus seems to be that the bulk of these changes are likely to happen in the next 3-5 years. Lesson: Organizations should prepare for the dislocation such major changes usually entail. This means proactive change management, cultural adaptation, and willingness to tolerate experiments to find the way forward.
  • Technology and organizational constraints often hold back social business transformation. Another vital thread that emerged from the data is that respondents generally felt they could do more, that progress would be better, if obstacles such as ingrained culture and predispositions cut be overcome more effectively. Lesson: One of the tough lessons of social business is that though the technologies make connectedness, sharing, and transparency dramatically easier, people have to want it. Many organizations will have to so some soul-searching and blunt self-assessments if they are to achieve the benefits that are now being reported.

The upshot is that sustained success with social business is happening for some organizations, but that most companies are still in the “developing” phase. However, those that have been successful are continuing to report, year after year, compelling benefits and results. Yet it’s also clear that social business is yet another technology-enabled change that will have uneven adoption across the enterprise world, and the likely effect is to even further separate the leaders and the laggards. Finally, those that put their shoulder to the effort at moving to social business are achieving very real and statistically significant benefits.

Note: I’ll be catching up on my blogging over the holidays and making my round-ups and predictions for next-generation enterprises. Stay tuned for updates on social, next-gen mobile, consumerization, big data, and much more.

Handset Manufacturers: Who are we kidding with the anemic smartphone batteries?

Yesterday, I took the plunge and used up one of my line upgrades on my Verizon Wireless account on a Samsung Galaxy Nexus. My wife, who dutifully went to the store yesterday to pick it up for me when I was away on a business trip got my current Droid Bionic in trade.

I’ve only been playing with the Nexus for a few hours, and I happen to think it is a great phone, but it is yet again another of the latest crop of smartphones that all have the same exact problem: an anemic battery, with a whole 1850 milliampere-hours (mAh) to keep this hungry 4G phone with a super-bright AMOLED HD display running all day.

This has been going on for years, ever since I started using smartphones with my original Blackberry Bold 9000. If you want a whole day of uninterrupted use without having to top off your charge, you need to go buy an extended battery instead.

The ones that come with the phones just aren’t good enough, and I’m including Apple with their ridiculous sealed battery compartments in this complaint too. A whole 1400 mAh to run the iPhone 4S for a full day of use? Seriously?

And Motorola, just what the hell were you thinking when you designed an ultra-thin 4G Android phone with a sealed battery compartment with the Droid Razr? That’s like building a Lamborghini with a 4 gallon gas tank. It’s not going to go very far.

A whole industry of smartphone accessories from 3rd party battery manufacturers has cropped up in order to deal with this problem. SEIDIO Innocell is one of the more well-known companies and they produce huge Lithium Ions for most of the major brands and carriers .

For example, the ones that they produce for the newer 4G phones are in the 2800-3500 mAh range. These are all pretty much guaranteed to keep a phone running in 4G mode running for an entire 8 hour business day with moderate usage.

And if you drop your phone down to 3G and only turn the GPS services and the email sync on when you need them, you can keep it running around 16 to 20 hours with one of these batteries.

Still, I don’t understand why we need to have default anemic batteries in the first place. I understand the desire for manufacturers to keep handsets thin, but let’s face it, this is getting ridiculous.

A lot of this has to do with Apple driving the industrial design ethos that everyone is now competing with, but I find that Apple-envy ideology in order to attract customers when it comes to phones a bit nuts.

I mean, the entire auto industry doesn’t try to make all cars look like Ferraris. So why should every smartphone strive to be ultra-thin? How can you reasonably expect a day of life out of a 4G, let alone a 3G phone with heavy usage with a battery with less than say, 2500 mAh?

This is doubly infuriating because the first thing that I do when I buy a new phone is want to put in a bigger battery. In the case of the Galaxy Nexus, Verizon offers a Samsung OEM 2100 mAh battery to replace the default 1850 mAh one.

That’s what, a whole 250 mAh improvement? Why isn’t that the default battery in the first place?

After you’ve bought your extended battery, you now have to figure out how to get it into a protective case. This is even more of a problem, because companies like OtterBox (my case vendor of choice) only design their cases for the default battery, not for 3rd-party batteries, or even the extended OEM batteries offered from the carrier.

I also went through this issue on my Droid Bionic — Motorola offers its own extended battery, the 2760 mAh BW8X. But good luck finding any 3rd-party case that fits it.

Until battery chemistry improves to allow thinner batteries to hold a much larger charge, the only solution to battery anemia is for the handset OEMs and the carriers to finally face up to the facts that trying to sell a thin phone with a battery that isn’t up to the task is doing a huge disservice to the customer.

And that may very well mean sacrificing the “I want to be like Apple” ethos and giving us bigger batteries and somewhat thicker phones by default.

Has your phone’s default anemic battery driven you into extended 3rd-party battery products? Talk Back and Let Me Know.

Jalan Diblokade, Aktivitas Warga Lima Desa di Bima Lumpuh

Metrotvnews.com, Dompu: Aktivitas warga di lima desa
di Kecamatan Lambu, Kabupaten Bima, Nusa Tenggara Barat (NTB), hingga
Senin (26/12) masih lumpuh akibat aksi pemblokadean jalan oleh ribuan
warga sejak Ahad kemarin.

Junaidin, 60, tokoh masyarakat Desa Rato,
Kecamatan Lambu, meminta wartawan membatalkan niatannya memasuki desa

memfasilitasi, namun jangan sekarang.

Komisi III DPR Akan Panggil Kapolri

Metrotvnews.com, Jakarta: Komisi III DPR akan
memanggil Kapolri, Jenderal Timur Pradopo terkait bentrokan warga
Sape, Bima Nusa Tenggara Barat (NTB) dengan aparat keamanan yang
terjadi pada Sabtu (24/12).

"Komisi III DPR akan panggil
Kapolri Timur Pradopo begitu memasuki masa sidang nanti.

Anggota Komisi III DPR, Yahdil Abdi

Anggota DPR asal daerah pemilihan
Tulang Bawang, Provinsi Lampung.

internal Polri, termasuk penyegaran pimpinan Polri," Yahdil.(Ant/BEY)

HBO cancels 'How to Make it in America,' 'Hung' & 'Bored to Death' - picks up 'Enlightened'

HBO has cancelled three series - How to Make it in America, Hung, and Bored to Death.

Along with that announcement, it's picked up Enlightened - starring Laura Dern - for season two.

My beef with HBO for How to Make it in America: you waited over a year for season two! Audience forgot and lost interest - what did you expect?

Are you upset or happy for any of these news pieces?

Measuring community health: Achieving balanced social media growth

Note: The following is a guest post by Apollo Group’s Jorge Camargo that explores system thinking approaches to cultivating and managing online communities through a real-world case study of the University of Phoenix. I believe it’s a significant story backed by data that shows how strong community management backed by the strategic use of social analytics can increase the business performance of social media. - Dion Hinchcliffe

The content contribution pyramid reporting model enabled us to understand variations in context, purpose and participants within each of our communities while keeping an eye on overall growth trends. Conventional wisdom tells us Community Owners should rely on two key metrics to track the success of an online community: Membership (number of registered users) and participation (number of active users in a given time period). That’s well and good but what about measuring the health of the community, not just its size?

Back in 2010, our team at the University of Phoenix created PhoenixConnect, one of the largest academically-focused communities in the world with over half a million registered members, 40% of which are active participants every month. Moreover, students and faculty members who participate in the community spend an incredible 25% more time-on-site than other their peers who are not. This additional time-on-site is incremental, meaning that it does not cannibalize time spent in the classroom. As satisfied as we were with these numbers and their impact on our student’s engagement, we realized early on that we were only measuring the impact of the community on overall student behavior but not the behavior inside the community itself. The first step towards closing this gap was understanding who were these different types of users and what key indicators should we use to track their behavior within the community?

The Contribution Framework

Back during the “dawn” years of social media, people like Bradley Horowitz (then with Yahoo!) and Jakob Nielsen were already tackling this question and pointing out the participation inequalities between community participants, eventually coining the term “participation pyramid” to denote a 1:10:100 ratio between those creating content (creators), those engaging with content created by others (synthesizers) and those simply consuming said content (consumers). The major takeaway both Horowitz and Nielsen left us with back in 2006 was that as social media matured, it was imperative to remove barriers to participation in order to drive growth across all three user segments.

Social Media Growth: Horowitz's and Nielsen's Pyramid
Figures 1 & 2: Horowitz’s Contribution Pyramid and Nielsen’s Pyramid

Our team liked the contribution model outlined by Horowitz and Nielsen so we used it as the basis for our Community Health reporting framework, iterating along the way. The result is encapsulated in the three maturity stages described below.

Stage 1 – Creating the Pyramid KPI and Segmenting Communities

First off, we decided to segment out our KPI reporting into creators, synthesizers and consumers – a simple enough task given the fact that our Jive SBS platform clearly reports the number of discussions, replies and views for each community. During the first iteration of our community we did not have the right instrumentation in place to measure unique contributors so we settled on the number of discussions, messages and views for a community as good enough proxies for creators, synthesizers and consumers respectively. We plotted the data (messages/replies per discussion threads and views per discussion thread) for our four major communities and came up with the following visualization aimed at allowing us to understand the distribution and behavior of users within each community:

Social Media Growth Content Contribution Ratio
Figure 3: November 2010 Contribution “Pyramid” for 4 major PhoenixConnect communities

Which community do you think is the most balanced? This is our interpretation and how we use this data to drive decision making and investment:

  • Support Communities seem to be underperforming relative to its peers but we quickly abstracted that this community is clearly transactional in nature (question-and-answer) so we would expect a much shallower degree of engagement evidenced by low replies/views per discussion numbers.
  • Academic Communities have the highest synthesizer ratio (messages per discussion thread), which is great since these communities are aimed at encouraging constructive academic discourse between our students and faculty. However the consumer ratio is the highest of the bunch (126 views per discussion), which implies people are viewing the discussions but are not as incented to participate or engage. This insight helps us drill deeper into the behavior inside these communities to understand whether or not we have a content quality problem.

Stage 2 – Removing Barriers to Contribution and Consumption

As we discussed earlier, Horowitz and Nielsen both argued in favor of “removing barriers to participation.” In early 2011 we made two major changes to our community platform that addressed this specific problem:

  • We upgraded from Jive 4.0 to Jive 4.5 in order to take advantage of the improved contribution features, particularly the revamped activity feed and the “Like” button (which improves ultra lightweight participation)
  • We surfaced the activity feed to the home page of our student portal in order to increase awareness and consumption of community content.

After releasing these changes, we adjusted our KPI metric slightly (to account for “likes” as indicators of synthesizer contribution). The results can be seen below:

Social Media Growth Content Contribution Ratio at Stage 2
Figure 4: August 2011 Extended Contribution “Pyramid” for 4 major PhoenixConnect communities

As you’ll notice at first glance there was a dramatic shift in the ratios: contributions from synthesizers and consumers tripled thanks to these two key enhancements. In short, we were able to see the return on investment in both a Jive upgrade as well as a custom activity feed widget on our student portal homepage.

But aren’t these ratios misaligned? The quick answer is yes. Like many first generation communities out there, PhoenixConnect heavily relied on user-generated content (UGC) to seed conversations. UGC is great to get a community off the ground but it’s far less effective when it comes to creating a steady seeding of relevant, on-topic and insightful conversations at scale. Our ability to generate fresh, engaging content could not keep up with the newfound demand from our community. This data-driven insight was used to inform and adjust our community strategy particularly around content creation through a two-pronged approach:

  • Create a community content team responsible for generating monthly editorial calendars that will generate a consistent source of new content our community can congregate around
  • Break down barriers to content creation by introducing new objects beyond discussions. These include capabilities such as blogs, ideation and most importantly, the upcoming Jive 5.0 What Matters stream to bring improved discoverability and relevance to status updates

Stage 3 – Disseminating Insights and Keeping your Team Accountable

Constantly pivoting and course-correcting is a must for any Community Owner; however it can be a dizzying prospect for other people in your organization who don’t care or don’t need to care about the details. In order to keep a consistent KPI metric for community health that can be disseminated inside of our organization and easily interpreted, we created a simple “score” based on a contribution-pyramid inspired algorithm:

Community Health Formula

We made sure we weighed this score against our all-time highest activity day to give us both an easy-to-read percentage as well as a good frame of reference for how active our community is at any given point in time. The graphic below gives you an example of how we report “Health” for a particular PhoenixConnect community:

Community Activity Score Example
Figure 5: August 2011 Community Activity Score for a PhoenixConnect community.

Note that the huge jump in activity in March 11 was a result of the enhancements described in Stage 2 above and the ensuing “shiny penny” bump consistent with new features

Each and every community out there will have its own particular intricacies and you organization will surely require you to adhere to its own KPIs and reporting frameworks. In our case, the content contribution pyramid-inspired reporting model was a very valuable addition to our reporting toolbox. This KPI enabled us to understand variations in context, purpose and participants within each of our communities while keeping an eye on overall growth trends.
